About the presenter

Prof. David O. Olukanni is a Professor of Civil Engineering. He earned his B.Eng., M.Eng. and Ph.D degrees in Civil Engineering with research focus in Water Resource and Environmental Engineering. He is a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship to the United State, where he studied at the University of Oklahoma, Norman and did his doctoral research at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, U.S.A. His additional focus is on Waste Management, Material Recovery and its Sustainable Application, Resource Recovery, Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Sustainability, Circular Economy, Waste to Energy, Wastewater Treatment System, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) programs; and Water Supply in rural and urban communities to name a few.

He has published on issues that relates to water and the environment in book chapters, local and International reputable Journals. He has more than 56 SCI publications in the field of waste management and has authored over 180 peer-reviewed articles, proceedings and invited papers. He has won several awards and grants for research, and travel Scholarships to International Conferences abroad on Water and Environmental related issues. He is a registered member of learned and professional associations, among which are: Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN); Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE); American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE); Fulbright Alumni Association of Nigeria (FAAN) and the State Alumni.gov. - Prof. Olukanni is a member in Council of COREN, the highest regulatory engineering body in Nigeria and privilege to Chair a new committee that oversees two (2) new departments: Planning, Research & Statistics and Quality Assurance & Compliance.

He has over 20 years of Academia and Industry Experience and has participated in many Civil Engineering projects where he worked with consultants and construction companies and have many jobs completed to his credit. He has served on two terms as Head of Civil Engineering Department; Director of Quality Assurance and Academic Standards; Pioneer Director of Covenant University Central Instrumentation Research Facility (CUCIRF) and has also served as the Dean of the College of Engineering. He has served as the Chair, Senate Business Committee of Covenant University. He is the pioneer Chair of Waste to Wealth Initiative and the Centre for Research in Waste Management at Covenant University. He served as the Team Leader, University Internal Accreditation Panel for Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs. He is a Visiting Scholar to the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University, USA, and an EESC-A Scholar (Engineering Education for Sustainable Cities in Africa) with the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, University of Toronto, Canada. He is also a Visiting Researcher and Scholar to the Malawi University of Business and Applied Science (MUBAS). He serves on the Editorial Board and as a reviewer for many journals.

He also serves as assessor and external examiner for postgraduate dissertations and thesis in some Universities. His current responsibilities include Project Adviser, African Sustainability Infrastructure Mobility (ASIM) which supports mobility of students, faculty, and staff within Africa. He is the Vice-Chair of IconSWM-CE and Chair, country specific working group of IconSWM-CE, and Board member, International Consultant Committee of Waste to Energy ICCWtE. He is the cluster head: Urban Environmental Issues and National Development at Covenant University, the leading and fast-growing university in Nigeria. He has supervised many Masters’ and Doctoral Degree students. He has international cooperation in several countries such as USA, UK, Canada, China, Germany, Spain, France, India, South Africa, Egypt, Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, Zambia, Rwanda and Congo to name a few. He is the Host at “The Blessed Life International Christian Center” with the vision to “Empower Youths and Young Adults with Kingdom Knowledge and Entrepreneurial Skills for Profitable Living’’.

He is an Ordained Pastor in the Living Faith Church, a member of the Operational Review Committee of the Children’s Church and serves in the Senior-Teens arm of the Church in Canaan land. He enjoys Reading, meditating, designing, singing, travelling, sporting, and meeting people. He is happily married, and the marriage is blessed with children.
