The status and future of the Mining Industry in Malawi and abroad

The Department of Mining Engineering in collaboration with Higher Education Partnerships in Sub-Sahara Africa (HEPSSA) has organised a seminar for the students and professionals in the extractive industry. The theme of the seminar is “The status and future of the Mining Industry in Malawi and abroad.”

The purpose of the seminar extends from inspiring the students and the academic members of staff to providing a collaborative environment and sharing of ideas of the professionals in the sector.

In this regard, we have invited the Directors of Mines and Geological Survey Department, Mining Consultants, Country Director of Songwe Hill Project as main speakers of the seminar. There will be discussions at the end of each speaker’s presentation. The seminar will cover the following topics:

  • General overview of the extractive industry in Malawi and abroad
  • Current legislation framework of the sector
  • Mining permits and tenement procedure
  • Opportunities and challenges in the extractive sector
  • Status of the rare earth project in Phalombe-Songwe Hill projects
  • Update Geological Mapping and Mineral Assessment Project of
