The Management Development Centre (MDC) at The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), in collaboration with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), held a graduation ceremony on 24 October, 2025, for the third cohort of certified professional customs clearing agents at the MUBAS Main Campus in Blantyre.

In his remarks, Executive Director for Corporate Services at MRA, Douglas Katchomoza hailed the training programme, saying it is a key initiative in enhancing work relationship between customs officials and clearing agents.

“This is a very important training because, in the past, there were knowledge differences between customs officials and clearing agents. Most of the agents were learning on their own, without a proper platform to understand what was required of them. This programme is bridging that gap, ensuring that facilitation of goods is smoother and more efficient,” he said.

He added that the improved understanding between the two groups will significantly reduce queries, delays, and operational inefficiencies in customs processes.

Executive Dean of the School of Business and Economic Sciences at MUBAS, Dr. Rabiya Hanif, said the partnership between the university and MRA was established to strengthen professional capacity building customs industry.

“MUBAS partnered with MRA to address the gap that exists in the capacity of customs clearing agents and we are proud to see these graduates from this third cohort, equipped with the right skills and knowledge to transform their sector,” she said.

One of the graduates, Tambulani Kalua, a clearing agent with Safari Cargo said the knowledge gained from the training will help him and his fellow practitioners perform their duties professionally.

A total of 99 were awarded Customs Clearing Certificates after completing a 3-month training. Since the inception of the programme, the MDC has trained over 300 Customs and Clearing Agents.
