CAll for Applications: Certificate in Electrical Installation

Announcement   Electrical Engineering   June 26, 2020

The Polytechnic, through the Department of Electrical Engineering, is pleased to invite applications for a 4-month course to take place at the Polytechnic through blended model of Open, Distance and E-learning (ODeL). At the end of the course candidates will be awarded a Certificate in Electrical Installation (CEI). The short course will be conducted from 27th July 2020. The programme will be done online except for practical sessions where candidates are required to come to Polytechnic and be placed at industry. The course is non-residential and candidates will be required to make their own arrangements for meals and accommodation. The short course is being supported by the Strengthening Higher Education Access in Malawi Activity (SHEAMA) program, implemented by Arizona State University with funding from USAID Malawi.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Department has noted that there is a gap in the electrical installation industry. Most employers struggle to get skilled artisans who can do a professional job. Thus, the department of Electrical Engineering has developed the course to improve skills in the following areas:

  • Safety, Health and Regulations
  • Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering
  • Domestic Electrical Installation
  • Introduction to Industrial Electric Installation

Students will undergo a one-month internship where they will enhance their practical skills.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have an MSCE with AT LEAST PASSES in English, Mathematics and Science or General Science. Those from SHEAMA target rural districts of Karonga, Kasungu, Salima, Balaka, Mulanje and Chikwawa, especially adolescent girls and young women and persons with disabilities, are particularly encouraged to apply.

TUITION FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

The total mandatory fees payable per student for the entire (non-residential) programme is MK185, 000.00.  Scholarships will be made available to a few candidates that will meet the programme-set criteria.
