The workshop will provide a platform to bring together stakeholders involved in enhancing resilience to multi-hazard risks in Malawi. It will open a discussion on ongoing research stemming from the long-standing collaboration between MUBAS and Cardiff University. There will be a roundtable discussion to explore resilience of healthcare facilities , focusing on the social, environmental, political, and cultural issues associated with climate-induced risks. This discussion will draw on findings from two ongoing projects: HEFCW (Higher Education Funding Council Wales) and GCRF (Global Challenges Research Fund) funded projects and the SMART-H project funded by UKRI, which focuses on healthcare infrastructure resilience in Malawi, outlining its goals, methodology, and expected impact.
This workshop will highlight the critical intersection of social vulnerability and health sector interventions as part of a comprehensive strategy to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). Participants will engage in collaborative efforts to identify innovative solutions and policy pathways toward a more resilient future for Malawi.
Workshop goals include:
- Share knowledge among stakeholders focused on enhancing resilience to multi-hazard risks in Malawi.
- Strengthen existing cross-disciplinary and multinational collaborations on climate change and disaster resilience.
- Discuss and develop actionable strategies for improving the resilience of local communities in Malawi, particularly in remote and marginalized areas.
- Identify key interventions on healthcare systems to support the achievement of SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
- Contribute to Malawi’s goal of attaining low middle-income status by 2030 through strengthened resilience in vulnerable sectors.
Note: Attendance strictly by invitation
