The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) has been at the forefront of expanding access to higher education through its Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) Department. Established in April 2023, ODeL represents MUBAS’s commitment to providing flexible, inclusive, and technology-driven education that meets the evolving needs of learners in Malawi and beyond.

Through national and international collaborations, MUBAS ODeL ensures that students can study anytime, anywhere, using innovative digital tools and self-paced learning systems.


The ODeL Department was formally established in April 2023 with the appointment of Dr. Annie Tamara Chizengo (PhD) as its first Head, following initial coordination by Dr. Rabson Mgawi (PhD) from 2019 to 2023.


MUBAS ODeL works closely with development partners such as SAVE, SHEAMA, THES, and the Commonwealth of Learning, leveraging their expertise and resources to deliver world-class learning experiences.

Our Commitment

  1. Developing Self-Instructional Materials (SIMs) for flexible learning.
  2. Transforming the curriculum for the ODeL mode.
  3. Training faculty and support staff in ODeL delivery.
  4. Supporting students through online and offline learning systems, including the innovative MUBAS Offline ODeL Digital Library (MOODL).
  5. Managing the official Learning Management System (MOODLE).
  6. Promoting inclusivity for marginalised and vulnerable students.
  7. Innovating and exploring transformative digital education solutions.
