In a bold move towards promoting a healthier campus environment, the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) has recently implemented a comprehensive no-public smoking policy. The initiative aims to strike a balance between the rights of smokers and the well-being of non-smokers within the university community.

Under this new policy, smoking is restricted to designated areas on campus, ensuring that non-smokers can enjoy a smoke-free environment in key public spaces. “MUBAS recognises the importance of fostering a campus culture that prioritizes the health and comfort of all its members, said MUBAS Vice-Chancellor Professor Nancy Chitera”.

The decision aligns with international guidelines, including those set by the World Health Organization (WHO), which advocate for smoke-free public spaces. According to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), creating smoke-free areas is a crucial step in protecting people from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and supporting those who wish to quit smoking.

MUBAS has identified specific locations where smoking is permitted, ensuring that these areas are well-ventilated and equipped with proper disposal facilities for cigarette butts. Simultaneously, high-traffic public spaces, such as entrances, communal areas, and academic buildings, have been designated as strictly non-smoking zones.

The policy has been met with support from both smokers and non-smokers within the MUBAS community. Smokers appreciate the designated areas that cater to their needs, while non-smokers applaud the university's commitment to providing a healthier environment for everyone. Speaking on condition of anonymity, one member of staff who is a smoker had this to say, “As a smoker, I welcome the clear guidelines on smoking areas, ensuring a respectful balance between smokers and non-smokers on campus”.

To further promote awareness and adherence to the policy, MUBAS has launched an informative campaign across campus. Signage indicating smoking and non-smoking zones has been strategically placed, and informational sessions are being conducted to educate students, faculty, and staff about the rationale behind the policy.

MUBAS believes that this initiative not only contributes to a healthier campus but also reflects the institution's commitment to aligning with global health standards. By embracing a no-public smoking policy, MUBAS is taking proactive steps to create a campus that prioritizes the well-being and comfort of all its members.
