Background

The Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), formerly known as the Continuing Education Centre (CEC), is a self-sustaining entity of the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) which has been a key provider of lifelong learning in Malawi since the late 1960s. Initially focused on professional development, ICE expanded its portfolio in 1990s to include diploma programmes under the Board of Governors. However, the board was dissolved in 2002 by the government.

Following the dissolution of the Board, the CEC introduced international certificate and diploma programmes to fill the gap from various examination boards such as the City & Guilds International, Association of Business Managers and Administrators (ABMA) and Institute of Administration and Commerce (IAC). In 2024, the CEC was officially elevated to become the Institute of Continuing Education at a launch graced by the Minister of Education, Hon Madalitso Wirima. As part of the elevation, all long-term continuing education programmes at the Management Development Centre (MDC) were transferred to ICE.

To meet the increasing demand for tertiary education, ICE adopts a flexible blended-learning approach to education which comprises week-day and weekend modes of study. The Institute offers an opportunity for tertiary education for fresh Ordinary-Level (O-Level) and Advanced-level (A-Level) finishers as well as working people to enable them advance their careers.
