The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences Research Ethics Committee (MUBASREC) held its first Annual General Meeting from 18–19 November 2025 at Nalipiri Eco Resort in Mulanje.

The two-day gathering aimed at giving members an opportunity to reflect on the progress made over the past year, assess the challenges encountered, and set a clear direction for the year ahead.

Speaking in an interview, the Chairperson of MUBASREC, Associate Professor Peter Mhagama, said the AGM offered an important platform for the committee to look back on its journey and evaluate how far it has come in strengthening ethical research practices at MUBAS and beyond.

“We wanted to look back at what we have achieved in the past year, the challenges we faced, and how we intend to resolve them as we move forward,” Mhagama said.

“As a committee we have managed to review many protocols, issue certificates to approved research projects and conduct training sessions to build the capacity of members responsible for reviewing proposals,” he added.

He further expressed concern over the current paper-based system used for reviewing protocols. As a solution, he said the committee intends to digitalize its review system in the coming year to improve efficiency and ease the workload on members.

Established in November 2024, MUBASREC is a committee that oversees research conducted both at the university and externally, ensuring that studies meet internationally recognized ethical standards.
