Nanjiri Project takes off
Save project Environmental Safeguards Specialist, Memory Kamoyo, said strict adherence to the guidelines will ensure that the project finishes on schedule. She advised the contractor to prioritize safety of all workers to avoid unnecessary accidents.
“On the set of this project, we need to remind ourselves on environmental and social guidelines because we need to protect the environment and people working on the construction site and the surrounding areas,” she said.
Kamoyo said many times projects have stalled due to non-compliance of safety and social standards. She emphasized that projects are meant to improve communities and not to harm people.
“This project should help the people to improve their livelihoods and not to bring misery in their lives through breakups of marriages or contracting other diseases that may affect their lives,” she added.
Team leader for SAVE Project at MUBAS, Professor Harold Mapoma said the university will put in strict monitoring systems to ensure that all standards are met.
“As a team leader, I will be a constant presence here to ensure that this project gets completed without unnecessary impediments,” said Mapoma.
Community leaders surrounding the construction site have pledged their support for the successful implementation of the project. Group Village Headman Mwase said the project will not only transform the communities living around the campus but the country as a whole.
“This development is for the benefit of all Malawians because people from all over the country will come to study here,” Mwase said.
He advised all workers to discharge their duties diligently and ethically.
“You need to observe working hours and avoid coming here drunk. This is an opportunity for you to earn a living and you should not squander it,” Mwase said.
The project is expected to be completed in June, 2026.
