MUBAS Agricultural Mechanization Unit Receives Engineering Excellence Award
Innovation continues to take shape at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), with the University’s Agricultural Mechanization Unit (AgriMech) receiving the Engineering Excellence Award for Innovation in Engineering in recognition of its contribution to developing practical solutions for Malawi’s agricultural and industrial development.

The award was presented on 28 August 2026 during the Malawi Engineering Institution (MEI) Engineering Conference held in Salima.

The recognition highlights MUBAS’ efforts to develop locally driven engineering solutions that address practical challenges in the agricultural sector while promoting innovation, local production, and industrial development.

Speaking during the award presentation, Executive Dean of the School of Engineering, Associate Professor Burnet Mkandawire, said the recognition reflects MUBAS’ commitment to engineering innovation and the value of teamwork.

“This recognition reflects the commitment of our engineers and the value of working together. It is an encouragement for us to continue contributing our knowledge and skills towards developing solutions that respond to the needs of our country,” he said.

The award comes at a time when engineers in Malawi are being challenged to take a leading role in driving industrialisation by using their expertise to strengthen local industries, support economic transformation, and reduce reliance on imported equipment and services.

Speaking during the conference, Minister of Transport and Public Works, Hon. Jappie Mhango, urged engineers to utilise local skills and expertise to develop solutions to the country’s challenges.

“We cannot be reliant on importing things from outside all the time when we should be able, with our brains and our skills, to produce these things locally,” he said.

The recognition marks another milestone in MUBAS’ efforts to translate engineering knowledge and innovation into practical solutions that contribute to Malawi’s agricultural, industrial, and economic development.
