Dr. Innocent Kafodya provides strategic leadership for the Civil Engineering Department at MUBAS. His key responsibilities include developing and implementing departmental plans, strategies, and academic programmes, as well as leading resource mobilization and ensuring the efficient utilization of departmental resources. He actively supports staff in research, consultancy, and outreach initiatives, oversees curriculum review, and is dedicated to fostering a high-performing academic environment aligned with the university’s broader mission.
An accomplished structural engineer, Dr. Kafodya holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Johannesburg, an MSc in Structural Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in China, and a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Malawi. His research expertise centers on structural design and analysis, earthquake engineering, geomechanics, and the vulnerability assessment of buildings in both formal and informal settlements.
Dr. Kafodya is a prolific researcher with a track record of over 30 scholarly publications in elite international journals. He has been instrumental in securing and leading several prestigious international research partnerships, including GCRF-UKRI funded projects with Cardiff University and the University of Bristol focused on seismic resilience, sustainable construction materials, and climate-induced risks in Malawi.
His vision is to actualize MUBAS's goal of becoming an inclusive, engaged, entrepreneurial, innovative, and research-intensive university by fostering a dynamic academic environment that contributes significantly to national development.
