Mr. Mpinganjira said this on 9 January, 2026 at MUBAS Campus in Blantyre during the council’s maiden tour of the university’s infrastructure and facilities. He said the university council is committed to the improvement of key infrastructure such as classrooms, students’ accommodation and office space in order to create a conducive teaching and learning environment at the university.
‘’ The council is here to support the university’s vision, so there is need to have a cultural shift towards strategies that help in attaining our shared dream,’’ he said.
The Chairman also commended the university management for the various commercial initiatives that it is undertaking, saying such endeavors are key to self-sustainability of the university. He particularly singled out the establishment of MUBAS Commercial Limited as a clear manifestation of the university’s drive towards a robust resource mobilization strategy.
‘’ I am quite impressed with the progress made so far by the university in commercial investments and innovation, which clearly point towards a bright future for the university. Now we need to find ways of turning these investments into revenue for the university to reduce overdependence on government support,’’ said Mpinganjira.
He also emphasized on the importance of close collaboration between the university and the private sector.
‘’ We need to bring in partners who can invest in critical areas such as students’ accommodation to ease some of the challenges that our students are facing,’’ he said.
Among other facilities, the council members toured the University Innovation Pod (UniPod), the MUBAS Industrial Park, MUBAS Agriculture Mechanization Unit, mining laboratories, classrooms and offices.
During the tour, MUBAS management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Associate Professor Nancy Chitera, outlined some of the developments that the university has undertaken since it became a stand-alone university. The Vice-Chancellor also pointed out the challenges that the university is facing as it repositions itself in the higher education sector in the country.
Apart from touring the university’s facilities, the council members also held an extraordinary meeting as part of their orientation.
