MUBAS REC Members Trained in Research Ethics and Scientific Review
The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) Research Ethics Committee (REC) on May 28, 2026, conducted a training session for its members aimed at strengthening their capacity to carry out both scientific and ethical reviews of research proposals.

The training focused on enhancing committee members’ understanding of key components of scientific and ethical review processes to ensure that research conducted under the university meets the highest standards of quality, integrity and participant protection.

During the session, participants were equipped with skills to assess the scientific validity of research projects by examining critical elements such as research objectives, methodologies and hypotheses. The training also emphasized ethical considerations, particularly the protection and welfare of human and animal participants involved in research studies.

Research consultant Khama Mita underscored the importance of respecting the dignity of research participants, noting that ethical review extends beyond regulatory compliance to safeguarding fundamental rights.

“The Penal Code in Malawi states that human beings should be treated with dignity, not merely as a means to an end, but by recognizing them for who they are,” said Mita. “Animals also need to be protected and respected because both human rights and animal rights must be upheld in research.”

Mita added that research ethics committees play a critical role in ensuring that research benefits society while protecting the rights, safety and welfare of all participants.

Chairperson of the MUBAS REC, Associate Professor Peter Mhagama, said the training broadened members’ understanding of the review process and strengthened their ability to assess research proposals comprehensively.

“This training has equipped us with knowledge on how to conduct thorough reviews of research projects. We have learnt that the review process goes beyond ethical considerations to include scientific validity,” he said.

Mhagama further noted that the committee is committed to continuously building capacity in emerging areas of research.

“We look forward to more training opportunities, including those focusing on the use of Artificial Intelligence in research, so that we remain effective and responsive to developments in the research landscape,” he added.

The training forms part of MUBAS’ ongoing commitment to promoting responsible, high-quality research that meets both scientific and ethical standards while contributing to national and global development.
