Water Usage and Conservation at MUBAS
Water is Life.Conserve it.
At MUBAS, we are firmly committed to the sustainable management of Malawi's precious water resources. As a central part of this commitment, we systematically measure and monitor our total water consumption across all major campus facilities using detailed utility data from the Blantyre Water Board.

This data-driven approach allows us to manage our impact responsibly, identify opportunities for conservation, and track the effectiveness of our initiatives.

Our Water Consumption at a Glance

We transparently track our annual water usage, which is exclusively sourced from the Blantyre Water Board (mains supply). Our ongoing conservation efforts are powerfully reflected in our recent consumption data:

  1. The total volume of water used by the university in the 2023-2024 academic year (October 2023 - September 2024) was 201,271 cubic metres.
  2. Our consumption for the 2024-2025 academic year (October 2024 - July 2025) is 129,282 cubic metres for the first ten months. This projects to an annual total of approximately 71,989 cubic metres, indicating a dramatic reduction of over 36% year-over-year.
  3. This success builds on a longer trend, demonstrating our sustained commitment to water stewardship.

How We Measure and Manage

Our water management is built on a foundation of precise data, compiled directly from monthly Blantyre Water Board utility bills across all campus locations, including Main Campus, Chichiri, ODeL, and individual hostels.

The data we collect directly informs our conservation actions. The significant reduction in consumption achieved in the 2024-2025 academic year is a direct result of initiatives like the campus-wide installation of water-saving fixtures, a proactive maintenance program that quickly addresses leaks, and increased water conservation awareness across our community. This proves that our strategic investments and behavioral change campaigns are having a measurable, positive impact.
