Dr. Rodwell Simeon Bakolo is an accomplished engineer, researcher, and academic leader currently serving as Head of the Electrical Engineering Department at MUBAS. With a strong background in electronic engineering and a commitment to innovation in education and applied research, Dr. Bakolo provides strategic direction to enhance departmental excellence, industry relevance, and student preparedness in the field of electrical and electronics engineering.
He holds a PhD and MSc in Electronic Engineering from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, specializing in superconducting electronics, and a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Malawi, The Polytechnic. Dr. Bakolo has previously served as Acting Estates Development Officer at MUBAS and continues to contribute as a Senior Lecturer in Electronics and Computer Engineering.
His research interests are interdisciplinary and application-focused, spanning neuromorphic circuits; smart systems for security, homes, and cities; low-cost solar PV equipment; energy-efficient low-temperature electronics; and embedded systems for medical applications using FPGA technology. A notable achievement includes the design and deployment of a phototherapy light system for treating neonatal jaundice, funded by the African Network for Drugs and Innovation (ANDI), with units implemented at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.
Dr. Bakolo is dedicated to aligning the Electrical Engineering Department with Malawi’s national development goals, particularly under the Malawi 2063 vision. He aims to cultivate industry-ready graduates and foster research that addresses local challenges while contributing to global engineering knowledge.
In his personal time, Dr. Bakolo enjoys walking, watching live football, Formula 1, MotoGP, films, and taking afternoon coffee breaks.
